No, I don't think there is an equivalent in the novel, but I haven't read the identity reveal in a while. There might have been something in there that I've forgotten.
I think they just felt like it. I'm not even sure what they thought to accomplish, except giving us nice screencaps. It kinda feels more like a US show would treat the situation, making it slightly less serious, not the way the show usually treats their relationship: with respect and love.
Honestly it feels to me as though they were teasing or testing the censors--"How close can we get to having them kiss without it actually happening?"
If the censors are looking at intended or implied same-sex kissing, this would be axed. If the censors only looking at certain overt actions, this would stay.
