When I first saw this scene, I paused just after your cap #2 and made gasping-fish faces at my screen. There may have been shrill screeching, cannot confirm or deny.
Does this correspond to anything in the novel, or did they just ... feel like it?!?
No, I don't think there is an equivalent in the novel, but I haven't read the identity reveal in a while. There might have been something in there that I've forgotten.
I think they just felt like it. I'm not even sure what they thought to accomplish, except giving us nice screencaps. It kinda feels more like a US show would treat the situation, making it slightly less serious, not the way the show usually treats their relationship: with respect and love.
Honestly it feels to me as though they were teasing or testing the censors--"How close can we get to having them kiss without it actually happening?"
If the censors are looking at intended or implied same-sex kissing, this would be axed. If the censors only looking at certain overt actions, this would stay.
I mean, there is NO Heterosexual Explanation™, none. But it's still not Gay Kissing! So apparently it's OK!

I think it was a tease or a test of the censors, to see if they'd axe anything that wasn't overt Gay Kissing or Love Words. And it turns out they wouldn't!
Clearly, Zhao Yunlan just innocently wants to check if Shen Wei uses the same cologne as the Black-Cloaked Envoy. Clearly. *cough*
On my first watch, I was constantly blindsided and distracted by how beautiful Shen Wei is, so I do kind of understand Zhao Yunlan's odd behavior. He just got distracted for a sec. ;-)
I love that they came up with the dumbest "I was blowing dust off your face" excuse for this scene. And of course Shen Wei wearing that black tank top is always A+.
That black tank top is so incongruous. Why would he wear that under a white shirt? But I love that while they were already going for sexy, they didn't stop halfway. Black Tank Top FTW!
Ooh thank you for posting this sequence. It's so wonderful to look at it slowed down. You can really feel the chemistry between them and I love the way BY/ZYL leaned into it.
Also, I don't think we've talked enough about the way Shen Wei opens his eyes and just quietly LOOKS at ZYL, as if to say, I know you're looking and I know why, I'm hot like that, and I dare you to do something about it. *cries*
